What should you point Hyo at?

There are three sensible ways to set your working directory. Here’s each one and when it fits.

The rule of thumb underneath all of them: more scope means your agent can do more, less scope means more focus and less it can touch.

Your whole vault — your full second brain

This is the default, and it’s the right choice for most people.

Your vault root is the working directory, so your agent works across all of your notes. Ask it anything and it can draw on everything you know. This is the “work with your agent inside your second brain” setup — the one Hyo is really built for.

Choose this when you want your agent operating across your entire knowledge base.

One folder inside your vault

Sometimes you don’t want the whole brain. You want your agent focused on a single area or project.

You can point Hyo at one folder inside your vault instead of the whole thing. Your agent then only sees that folder. Good for when you’re deep in one project and don’t want it wandering through everything else.

Choose this when you want focus rather than reach.

A project folder outside your vault

Maybe your real work doesn’t live in Obsidian at all. You’ve got a project folder somewhere else — code, documents, a folder with its own CLAUDE.md — and you want your agent working there, while still using Obsidian’s clean chat panel to talk to it.

You can do that. Point Hyo at any folder on your computer, and it works from there while Obsidian stays your interface.

Choose this when the work lives elsewhere but you still want Hyo as the way you talk to your agent.

How to change it

To point Hyo at anything other than your vault:

1. Go to Settings → Hyo Claude Code Agent → Advanced → Working directory.
2. Enter the path to the folder you want, or use the browse button to pick it.
3. Restart Obsidian or reopen the Hyo panel so it picks up the change.

Note

Leave it blank to use your vault, which is the default. You only need to set this if you want a different folder.
