Set up Hyo on your phone

You’ll set up three things: Tailscale (the private link between your devices), mobile access on your Mac, and Hyo on your phone. Do the Mac steps first.

Before you start

• Hyo should already be installed and working on your Mac.
• Have your phone nearby.

Step 1: Install Tailscale on both devices

Tailscale creates a private network that only your own devices can see. It’s free for personal use.

1. On your Mac, install Tailscale from tailscale.com/download and sign in.
2. On your phone, install Tailscale from the App Store or Play Store and sign in with the same account.

Once both are signed in, your phone and Mac can reach each other privately — nothing is exposed to the public internet.

Step 2: Turn on mobile access in Hyo

On your Mac, open Obsidian → Settings → Hyo → Mobile and turn on Enable mobile access.

Hyo does the rest itself: it starts a small server for your phone to connect to, tells Tailscale to make it reachable from your other devices (and only your devices — never the public internet), and works out the address your phone will use.

You’ll know it worked in two places:

• The Status line on the same settings page turns green: On.
• The status bar at the bottom of the Obsidian window shows 📱 Mobile: on. It stays there whenever mobile access is running, and changes to 📱 Mobile: not working if something breaks — so you never have to guess.

The server runs only while Obsidian is open, so leave Obsidian running on your Mac when you want to use your phone.

If the status says not working, the usual cause is Tailscale: check it’s running and signed in, and if it asks you to enable HTTPS for your network, say yes, then turn mobile access off and on again.

Step 3: Install Hyo on your phone

Hyo installs on mobile the same way it does on desktop — through BRAT, in whichever vault you want it in.

1. In Obsidian on your phone, install and enable BRAT (Settings → Community plugins → Browse).
2. In BRAT → Add beta plugin, paste the Hyo repo URL and add it.
3. Enable Hyo in Community plugins.

Step 4: Connect the phone

If this vault syncs between your Mac and phone (iCloud, Obsidian Sync, or similar), there’s nothing to do — the address your phone needs syncs across with the vault, and Hyo connects on its own.

If the vault doesn’t sync, copy the address from your Mac (Settings → Hyo → Mobile → Phone address → Copy) and paste it on your phone under Settings → Hyo → Mobile → Gateway address.

Step 5: Open Hyo

Open Hyo on your phone. It connects to your Mac and you’re in — same conversations, same history. Tap the chip in the message bar to switch agent, model or permissions.

If it doesn’t connect, check that Obsidian is open on your Mac, that the Mac’s status bar says 📱 Mobile: on, and that both devices show as connected in Tailscale.

Everyday use

• Leave your Mac on with Obsidian open when you want phone access.
• You only do this setup once. After that, just open Hyo on your phone.
• Voice mode works on mobile too — hold or tap the mic to talk, and Hyo speaks back.
• The Mac’s status bar shows 📱 Mobile: on · 1 connected while your phone is attached.

More than one vault?

Each vault is its own setup: turn on mobile access in every vault you want on your phone, and each one gets its own address. They don’t fight over anything — you can run as many as you like from the same Mac, and each phone vault connects to its own Mac vault.
